What We Do

Democratic Sangha works to promote the principles of Democracy and strengthen people, institutions and processes through four focus areas.

Democratic Sangha

Areas of Focus

Democratic Sangha strengthens and defends democracy through four core programs.

Women's Participation

Women's Leadership

It is said the status of women is the status of Democracy. Advancing women's political and civic participation is key to strengthen democracy. Women in rural India are always at an added disadvantage due to low literacy levels and socio- cultural norms characterised by inequitable access to resources. The Rural Women's Leadership Program is dedicated to empowering rural women from poor and marginalised communities to be catalysts for community development and social change in villages.

Youth Leadership

Throughout Indian history, youth has always been at the forefront of movements that strengthen and sustain civic engagement and participation.

In Youth Leadership Program, we believe that increasing civic engagement among Indian youth will lead to their strengthened participation in democratic governance.

Elections and Voting

Today Money matters more than it ever did in Indian elections. In the increasingly high stakes world of election campaigning, aggressive displays of candidate wealth, from cash handouts to alcohol distribution, to big rallies, are becoming more common and more extravagant. The Elections and Voting Program works on non partisan voter registrations, helping rural voters make a informed choice by reading manifesto, election monitoring by trained domestic observers and sensitisation drives against the acceptance of cash handouts and alcohol.

Social Reforms

The Indian society is distressed and disillusioned with the state of affairs but do not know how to go about mending matters. The social reforms program works to channelise this frustration into a people's movement for change. The program seeks to provide a platform for all well meaning public spirited citizens to come together voice their concerns agitate for their resolution. There are various initiatives undertaken under this program.
